Backflip is seeking a Director of Finance to help build our corporate finance function as the company scales. As an early hire, this “player-coach” will play a critical role in ensuring Backflip executes at the highest standards. The ideal candidate possesses a strong entrepreneurial drive, and has the experience + skill sets to help design, build, and manage an institutional-grade finance function at an early-stage FinTech platform. Success in this role requires the ability to learn quickly while balancing structure and autonomy. This position is remote (U.S.) and reports to the Chief Operating Officer.
You will be responsible for monitoring and managing Backflip’s financial health, and will work closely with the COO / Founders to oversee Accounting, FP&A, and Treasury. You will partner with teams to ensure financial transparency, support strategic decision-making, and contribute to achieving ambitious growth objectives. This is a rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor (~50 person team) working directly with senior leaders in a fast-paced and well-capitalized startup (Series A).

Primary Responsibilities
Lead and manage the corporate finance team, including accounting, reporting, FP&A, and treasury functions for multiple entities
Oversee the closing process, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements
Manage budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
Work with the Accounting team to implement comprehensive accounting policies and procedures (GAAP)
Oversee Backflip’s treasury and cash management functions
Manage reporting to various stakeholders including investors (OpCo + AssetCo) and capital markets counterparties
Partner with executives to develop and implement financial strategies aligned with company objectives
Assist with investor relations, and preparing financial information for fundraising activities
Develop and maintain relationships with external auditors and various financial institutions
Identify and implement cost-saving measures to optimize financial performance
Stay up-to-date on industry trends and regulatory changes impacting the mortgage lending space
Some travel is required (e.g. - company offsites)
This role will evolve as the company grows; there will be various tasks that fall outside of the responsibilities above.
Qualifications - Role Specific
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
4+ years of experience in a finance leadership role, preferably in a high-growth startup or similar environment
Prior experience at a top-tier financial institution or accounting firm
Track record of success in building and managing high-performing finance teams
Demonstrated expertise in GAAP accounting principles and financial reporting
Familiarity with complex entity structures and capital markets strategies (warehouse lines, ABL, notes sales, securitizations, etc.)
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights
Passion for FinTech or real estate investment finance; basic understanding of mortgages
General understanding of real estate investment concepts
Comfortable with advanced mathematical and finance calculations
Exemplary spreadsheet skills (Excel; Google Sheets)
Advanced computer skills - demonstrated desire to learn new technologies (we use Slack + Notion + Google Workspace + HubSpot + more)

$150,000 - $195,000 a year
*The Compensation figure above includes Base Salary + Performance Bonus, and is based on a variety of factors including prior experience. In addition to a competitive market salary, Backflip employees receive equity stock options, 100% paid health care, a 401K + company match, among other industry-leading benefits.
